Checker play
The 5pt is the 5pt.
How important is the 5pt? Extremely. There are often situations when it is better to make the 5pt than to hit. As a rule of thumb in the early going, the only time you dont make the 5pt is when you have the opportunity to hit on the other side of the board. Although this roll allows you to conveniently make the 7pt you have to look at the resulting position. The bar pt. is much more valuable when you have your opponents checkers pinned back on your 1 or 2pt. Making the bar pt here also leaves you with a very stripped position and a heavy stack on your 6pt which will be hard to unload. I was shocked when I first saw that this was a blunder but now it makes sense.
Keys to remember:
The 5pt is the most important pt on the board. It is important to unstack that heavy 6pt when you have a chance. Try to avoid making plays that leave you with few alternatives on your next roll. Remember these things even if there is a tempting hit to be made. Oh ya.. did I mention how important that 5pt is?
