Ever try to go for the big play or do too much and have
it backfire? Well its positions like this that can get you there. I was
thinking that if I could hit that checker and make the point and pick up the
two loose checkers then I would have great gammon chances, and go up 3-0. After
looking at this one again I see that I just went and put myself in peril for
no reason. Not only is the return shot a clear game changer, the odds
of white getting in off the bar are very good and getting hit loose in my
opponents board is definitely trouble. Clearly the thing to do is jump out
with the 5-4 and hope my opponent doesn't roll a 2 and work from there. I was a
clear favourite before my bonehead play and gave my opponent a great chance of
winning by screwing it up. Keys to remember: No need to go for
the big play when you are clearly ahead and stand to lose a lot by going for
that little extra. The payoffs just aren't worth it. Patience is harder to come
by than throwing caution to the wind in the middle game.
